Art Exhibition

On the 15th November 2004 Omagh Support and Self Help Group hosted a week long Exhibition in Omagh Tourist Information Centre entitled "The Summer of '98". The emotive exhibition is attributed to the work of renowned artist Mr Ray Duncan and provides a lasting commemoration to the individual lives lost during that fateful summer - in the Omagh atrocity and the tragic death of the Quinn children, Ballymoney. * Button: Click here to see pictures

Artist's Statement - Mr Ray Duncan

"Most recently my work has returned to a concern for the events in Northern Ireland. This exhibition is a selection of works over a period of 2 years. At first I was driven by a sense of anger about the murder of the Quinn children and then the slaughter of Omagh. Now I hope that the work will be seen as a commemoration of the individual lives that were lost.

Press photographs became the starting point for the paintings about the murdered Quinn children. This was also true for my work on the Omagh bombing. The photographic still images taking from a home video made on the day and used in the press gave a sense of detachment, of unreality to the loss of life so often portrayed. By the use of paint, change of scale and the fractured quality of the images the reality of the events seem to return and I would hope remind the spectator of the inhumanity of it all".

Ray Duncan

Omagh Support and Self Help Group and Mr Duncan feel very passionately that this historic collection of paintings should remain together as a collection, preferably in the town which they relate to. However, if you would like to purchase the collection or donate to our group to enable us to purchase it please contact Omagh Support and Self Help Group Office on 028 8225 9877 or alternatively contact us.
